The Truth

Australian book prices are highly competitive with similar markets around the world.

Surveys of book prices in the UK, US and via the internet show consistently that allowing for the extra cost of GST in Australia, some books are cheaper in Australia, some are more expensive, others are about the same.

Significantly, bundles of the top bestsellers are notably cheaper in Australia than in the US or UK and comparable to Amazon – the graph below shows the comparison



The surveys compared recommended retail prices of leading bestsellers in all three countries and on Amazon (Australia prices are less GST because there is no equivalent US or UK tax, and Amazon prices include freight).
